The unexpected victory for centrist candidate, Nicusor Dan, in the second round of Romania’s presidential election on Sunday marks a major comeback against the far-right, and will ease concerns about the country veering from its pro-EU stance. That said, the next government appointed by Dan will face a major challenge in stabilising the public finances and, while there is likely to be a brief relief rally, we see limited upside for Romania’s financial markets. Meanwhile, the narrow lead for the pro-EU candidate in the first-round of Poland’s election sets up a tight run-off, and suggests the government could face further challenges in delivering its reform agenda and addressing EU concerns over the rule of law.
