How would a diesel export ban affect Latin America?
A US diesel export ban would be particularly disruptive for Latin America as the region is reliant on the US for supply and has large diesel-intensive sectors, including road freight transport, agriculture and mining. Vulnerabilities appear highest in Central America followed by Chile. Mexico’s booming exports to the US could be threatened. But that also provides reason to think that Mexico might secure a carve out, which would mitigate the impact on global prices.
