South Africa’s government debt-to-GDP ratio should peak this year, and we think the government will use the Medium-Term Budget Statement (MTBPS) later this month to reaffirm its fiscal discipline credentials. The resulting improvement in fiscal credibility should keep South Africa’s credit spreads narrow, support lower interest rates, and make sustained growth above 2% more attainable.
